蒸汽机车是利用蒸汽机，把燃料（一般用煤）的化学能变成热能，再变成机械能，而使机车运行的一种火车机车。1814年，英国人乔治·斯蒂芬森发明了第一台蒸汽机车。人类加快了进入工业时代的脚步，蒸汽机车成为这个时代文化和社会进步的重要标志和关键工具。

1952年，四方机车车辆厂制造出了中国第一台“解放”型蒸汽机车。其后，四方、大连、唐山、大同等机车车辆厂陆续生产了近万台蒸汽机车。蒸汽机车一度成为中国铁路运输的主要牵引动力。

1988年12月21日，大同机车厂停止蒸汽机车生产，标志着中国蒸汽机车制造史的结束。随着科学技术的进步，蒸汽机车已被内燃、电力机车、动车组取代。
